The Sign
Book Synopsis

This book neither introduces a history of the theories of semiotics known in the contemporary times, nor informs us of the analytical gainings of the semiotics method, nor does it provide us with the prominent figures which have made the glory and fame of the modern semiotics. It is confined to a contemplation on the holistic human experiment: the persisting attempts of Man to get rid of the evils of a severe and merciless nature, in order to shelter within a cultural world that would provide him with warmth and security, in addition to the understandable interpretations of the natural and social phenomena alike. The book is a semiotic approach that respects the independence of the cognitive concept of "Sign" as a discipline, at the same time, the book is a presentation of the principles of linguistics. It is an exploration of the forms of the semiotic classification, patterns of the semiotic production, and the philosophical issues stored within the concept of sign.

It is a chronicle of Man's experience with symbols and their multi forms; and of the religious, philosophical and social visions that recognize, in the elements of existence, symbols which replace other invisible powers, or "the sound through which God projects His almighty to us" as it is known in all the heavenly religions.

About the Author

Umberto Eco (born January 5, 1932) is an Italian medievalist, semiotician, philosopher, and novelist, best known for his novel The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa) and his many essays.

After this, Eco worked as a cultural editor for the state broadcasting station Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) and also lectured at the University of Turin (1956-64).

A group of avant-garde artists-painters, musicians, writers-whom he had befriended at RAI became an important and influential component in Eco's future writing career. This was especially true after the publication of his first book in 1956, Il problema estetico di San Tommaso, which was an extension of his doctoral thesis. This also marked the beginning of his lecturing career at his alma mater.

About the Translator

Saeed Al Ghanmi is an Iraqi author who lives in Australia. He has written and translated more than 30 works, including "Meaning and Words," "Masks of the Text," and "Language and the Literary Discourse." His most famous workds include the translation of "The Sands" by Borges, "Blindness and Insight" by Paul de Man, "Time and Narration" by Paul Ricoeur, and "The Arabs and The Golden Bough" by Stitkivich.

About the Reviewer

Saeed Binkard is a professor of Semiotics at the Arts faculty of Meknes University in Morocco. He is also the General Manager of "Signs," a magazine specialized in Semiotics and modern Literary studies. A Sorbonne graduate, Saeen Binkard is the author of "Semiotics: Concepts and Applications," and "Introduction to Semiotics of Sh. Borris." He has also translated many other works and was awarded the "Atlas" Prize for his translation of "Madness and Civilization" by Michel Foucault.
